Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and Play Therapist
Liam Lyne is a Donegal-based Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with a specialisation in Play Therapy. He works as part of the therapeutic team at Over the Rainbow Children’s Therapy Centre, where he provides psychotherapy and play therapy for children, adolescents, and families within a warm, relational, and trauma-informed practice.
Liam offers:
• Play Therapy for children aged 4–12 years
• Creative Psychotherapy for teenagers aged 13–18 years
• Parenting Support, recognising that parents and carers are central to a child’s emotional wellbeing and that meaningful change happens best when adults around the child are supported and included
His interest in psychotherapy was inspired both by his experience as a parent to four children and by witnessing his wife’s passion and commitment to therapeutic work. Reading her writings and engaging with the ideas behind play and creative therapies sparked his curiosity and led him to begin his own professional journey in this field.
Liam first completed a Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills with Children’s Therapy Centre in Limerick. He then went on to complete a Level 8 Certificate in the Principles of Art Therapy at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, followed by a Level 8 qualification in Play Therapy with Children’s Therapy Centre in Westmeath and Limerick. This progression culminated in a Level 9 Master’s degree in Creative Psychotherapy with a specialisation in Play Therapy, completed over four years with Children’s Therapy Centre.
Liam’s work is grounded primarily in a humanistic, Rogerian, child-centred approach, offering congruence, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. He aims to create a gentle, caring, and emotionally safe therapeutic space where each child or young person feels held, understood, and met exactly where they are developmentally.
As an integrative psychotherapist, Liam draws from multiple therapeutic approaches depending on each child or teenager’s developmental stage, emotional needs, and family context. His work is trauma-informed and neurobiologically informed, with a strong focus on emotional regulation, attachment, and relationship. He has experience supporting children who have experienced emotional distress, anxiety, behavioural difficulties, and relational challenges.
Play therapy is central to Liam’s work with children, recognising play as a child’s most natural language. Through symbolism, metaphor, and creative expression, children are supported to explore thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to express verbally. With adolescents, Liam integrates talk therapy with creative modalities such as art, sand, clay, and other expressive media to support emotional expression, self-understanding, and connection.
Liam holds full professional indemnity and public liability insurance, is Garda vetted, and works in accordance with Children First guidelines and relevant ethical and safeguarding standards. He is committed to ongoing professional development and to maintaining best practice in child and adolescent psychotherapy.
