Supporting Teenagers in a Way That Feels Right for Them

Charlotte Lyne Adolescent & Child PsychotherapistAdolescence can be an emotionally intense and confusing time. Young people may struggle with anxiety, low mood, identity questions, school pressure, friendships, family relationships, or the impact of earlier experiences. Many teenagers find it difficult to talk openly about what is going on for them, particularly in traditional talk-based settings.

Creative psychotherapy offers an alternative, developmentally appropriate way for adolescents to explore their inner world in a manner that feels safer, more natural, and less pressured.

What Is Creative Psychotherapy?

Creative psychotherapy combines talking therapy with creative and expressive approaches, allowing young people to communicate thoughts and feelings indirectly as well as verbally. This can reduce anxiety, lower defences, and help adolescents express experiences that may feel confusing or hard to put into words.

Creative psychotherapy can help adolescents to:

  • Make sense of their emotions and experiences
  • Develop emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Explore identity, self-esteem, and relationships
  • Process stress or trauma in a contained, supportive way
  • Feel more in control of the therapeutic process
Creative Ways We Work
Therapy is tailored to each young person and may include:
• Art, drawing, or visual expression
• Sand tray and symbolic work
• Clay and other tactile materials
• Storytelling, metaphor, and narrative work
• Movement or sensory-based activities
• Talking therapy, where appropriate

Adolescents are always offered choice and autonomy. Creative methods are invitations, not requirements, and young people are supported to engage in ways that feel comfortable and respectful of their boundaries.

A Safe, Trauma-Informed Space

Our work with adolescents is trauma-informed and neurobiologically informed, with a strong focus on emotional safety, regulation, and relationship. Creative approaches can help access emotional processing in ways that bypass pressure to explain or justify feelings, supporting deeper understanding and healing over time.

Building Trust and Confidence
The therapeutic relationship is central to our work. We prioritise creating a space where adolescents feel accepted, listened to, and taken seriously. Through creative psychotherapy, young people are supported to develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and resilience as they move toward adulthood.

Creative psychotherapy is suitable for adolescents up to 18 years who are experiencing emotional, behavioural, relational, or life challenges and who may benefit from a flexible, creative, and relational therapeutic approach.
